Stripe

This site uses Stripe for payments, from subscriptions to customer purchases.

The main reason for this is that since 2018 PayPal no longer offers the same split payment functionality it used to. Stripe does offer split payments, which is the mechanism for disbursing payments to vendors, and more importantly to multiple vendors if a customer buys products from more than one vendor in a transaction.

Happily, Stripe fees are quite a bit lower than PayPal’s. The current fees are:

Stripe

1.4% + 20p for European cards
2.9% + 20p for non-European cards

PayPal

Monthly sales
Up to £1,500 – 3.4% + 20p
£1,500.01 – £6,000.00 – 2.9% + 20p
£6,000.01 – £15,000.00 – 2.4% + 20p
£15,000.01 – £55,000.00 – 1.9% + 20p

This site uses Stripe SCA

Strong Customer Authentication (SCA), a rule in effect as of September 14, 2019, as part of PSD2 regulation in Europe, requires changes to how your European customers authenticate online payments. Card payments require a different user experience, namely 3D Secure, in order to meet SCA requirements. Transactions that don’t follow the new authentication guidelines may be declined by your customers’ banks.

Receiving Payments

When a customer buys a product from your online store, the payment is released as soon as the order stage is “Processing”. However, it can take up to a week for the funds to be recieved to your bank. This is all controlled by Stripe, and not under our control.

When a customer buys from more than one vendor in a transaction, the payments are split and dibursed to each vendor. As we do not take any commission, these payments are straightforward, however due to recent changes with the SCA background processes, there were occasions when the first vendor was the only person to receive the funds. The other vendor funds went to our admin account as a fallback. We believe this is all now resolved and should no longer be a problem!
